American author and poet, born and died in Guildford, Connecticut. After a youth spent in business in Connecticut, Halleck came to New York City and attracted attention with humorous articles he wrote for the New York Evening Post. In 1819 he published the first of several editions of his longest single poem, Fanny, a satire on current fashions, social climbings, and politics written in the stanza form and meter of Byron's Don Juan.
